Efficiency in ship building

For cruise ships, freighters or yachts to be able to travel long distances in the open sea, complex supply systems on board are necessary. For the supply of oil and gas, many kilometers of pipelines are installed above and below deck. To optimize the limited space available inside the ship, the bending radii of the pipes must be kept very tight. Therefore, shipbuilders require systems that enable the production of pipes with very small bending radii. To meet this demand, Schwarze-Robitec developed the pipe cold bending machine CNC 220. This heavy-duty, electro-hydraulic machine weighs approx. 27.5 tons and can process, for example, pipes made of steel, seawater-resistant copper-nickel alloy, or stainless steel with a maximum diameter of 4.7 inches and maximum wall strength of 0.8 inches. This year alone, Schwarze-Robitec has already delivered 40 CNC HD machines – including five CNC HD machines with a maximum pipe diameter of 8.6 inches to customers from the shipbuilding industry and plant engineering. Schwarze-Robitec offers his customers bending solutions up to a maximum pipe diameter of 24.4 inches.

Restructuring its Sales Department

Schwarze-Robitec bids farewell its Sales Manager Jürgen Korte, who is retired at the end of April 2016. Along with this comes a new alignment from the bottom up that takes place throughout the entire management level of the company. A major objective is to expand the market position and be the first contact when it comes to tube bending solutions, even on an international platform. With the retirement of Jürgen Korte, Schwarze-Robitec is taking the opportunity to restructure its Sales Department. Heike Ahlers is the new Sales and Marketing Manager and functions as the extended arm of the company's management. Hired in 2013 by Schwarze-Robitec, she was significantly involved in 2015 with the opening of the current subsidiary in the USA. The objective of the restructuring is to ensure the company that can adapt to the ever faster changing international markets over the long term.

A new, smart, informative website

schwarze robitec9The new website of the tube bending machine manufacturer Schwarze-Robitec presents itself in a fresh look with large format images and a clear menu navigation. The highlight: Under the heading “Applications” the viewers can choose from nine different industries and immediately receive an overview of the suitable machines. This way the company offers its customers initial useful advice already on the website, which leads to the appropriate, custom-tailored machine in the next step. User friendliness is the magic word when designing a website. The readers should feel addressed at first sight and find all information quickly and simply through clear menu navigation. Schwarze-Robitec achieves this clarity through perfect interaction of products and their industrial application. In addition, large pictures provide more vividness. Matching icons as well as category filters simplify navigation through the machine range. Of course the page also has a so-called Responsive Design. That means: the replay adjusts optimally to all terminal equipment and screen sizes. The readers also have the option of subscribing to the Schwarze-Robitec Newsletter InfoPipline and so always obtaining the latest information.

Established USA Subsidiary

schwarze robitec8The tube bending machine manufacturer Schwarze-Robitec has opened its own subsidiary in North America. Since 1rst April 2015, Schwarze-Robitec America Inc. has been implementing the entire sales and service for the high-quality Tube Cold Bending Machines Made in Germany. Regular customers and new customers from the USA, Canada and Mexico benefit from the customer-specific on-site advice, shorter delivery times for spare parts and attractive conditions. The long-standing German company, founded in 1903 develops and manufactures tube bending machines for the automobile, shipbuilding and offshore industry, power plant construction and the chemical industry as well as special bending solutions for many other branches of industry. To improve the service for the continuously rising number of customers from North America and Mexico, Schwarze-Robitec has now opened its own US- subsidiary in Michigan. General Manager (CTO) is Chris Dorgan, who brings along decades of experience in service for Schwarze-Robitec machines. Worldwide, Schwarze-Robitec GmbH has already sold more than 2,400 machines, many of them have been in unrestricted production runs for more than 35 years.

Plate and Section Bending

schwarze robitec7Cones and cylinders for offshore projects, architectural structures, machine constructions, fuel depots, etc.: Kersten Europe now implements orders of this kind with the plate bending machine PB3-18-10 from Schwarze-Robitec. With the PB3-18-10, the toll manufacturer specialized in plate and section bending, has a powerful machine with a high level of torque, a cone bending device and hardened rollers for bending stainless steel plates. With an initial performance of 3,000 x 28/31 millimeters and a round bending performance of 3,000 x 45 millimeters, the PB3-18-10 is the ideal solution for bending particularly thick plates as they are used, for example, in the offshore sector. This is enabled through the roller diameter of 460 millimeters and the integrated lever arm system. The latter takes care of an available contouring force of up to 255 tons. After the delivery to the Polish subsidiary Kleszczów end of October 2014, Schwarze-Robitec completed the acceptance tests successfully and also trained the Kersten employees. Commissioning took place in November. In the run-up, Kersten had paid several reference visits to the company in Cologne, and there decided in favor of the PB3-18-10. In addition to the plate bending machine, Kersten Europe also works with the section bending machine SB3-140 from Schwarze-Robitec. The company from Cologne brought both machine series on the market at the beginning of 2014. As bending specialist for tubes, Schwarze-Robitec has been working internationally since the 1950s.

Bending the Costs Downward

schwarze robitec6There are many kilometres of pipe on oil platforms, complex chemical plants, refineries and large power stations. All feature similarly large stretches of pipeline. In view of these quantities, pipe fitting plays a special role in plant and pipeline construction; the conduit system must be installed quickly and efficiently. Moreover, these constructions are essential for the function and efficiency of the plants. With the CNC 320 HD bending machine from Schwarze-Robitec, the cold bending of a pipe with a nominal diameter of 12” NPS takes only around one minute – in contrast to the 30 minutes at least that would be needed for the warm bending process. In addition, there are other advantages. For example: with cold bending, materials can be processed that cannot be bent warm or for which heating is simply not permitted because it changes the microstructure of the material. As a result, cold bending has therefore only two real constraints: the space available in the workshop and the length of the machine. If during the bending process the long pipes do not axially collide, they can be processed into complex shapes directly in one pass. Additional positive points of the cold bending process are: the pipe is clamped in an index head and held in place by means of a collet in the transport unit and index head. After the first bend, it is directly transported forward and rotated as required. As a result, three dimensional pipe systems can be created very quickly without a single weld joint. Recently, the German mechanical builders constructed and delivered a machine to a customer in the refinery and offshore oil industry. The machine is able to process pipes up to 16” NPS with a radius of 1.5x D. As a result, a 16” Schedule 40 (323.5 by 10 millimetres) pipe, for example, can be bent with a radius diameter of only 485 millimetres.

L’argomento delle costruzioni leggere rimane in cima alla lista di priorità dell’industria automobilistica e di quella dell’aviazione. I tubi a parete sottile offrono parecchi vantaggi in questi settori - perché da un lato la loro leggerezza ha un effetto positivo sul consumo di carburante di automobili e aeroplani, e dall’altro raggiungono più velocemente la temperatura operativa richiesta per il processo di conversione catalitica dei gas di scarico, il che a sua volta porta a ottenere dei migliori valori di CO2. Durante il processo di formatura sono, tuttavia, molto difficili da lavorare e tendono a rompersi. Proprio per piegare questo tipo di tubi, Schwarze-Robitec ha ottimizzato il processo di trasporto delle sue macchine CNC, e adattato i suoi utensili di piegatura. Le forze di piegatura delle macchine CNC di Schwarze-Robitec sono esercitate sui tubi a parete sottile in maniera molto precisa. Grazie alla migliore adattabilità delle forze raggiunta da queste macchine, il risultato finale è sempre una piegatura assolutamente precisa - anche con tubi a parete sottile in titanio, alluminio, rame o acciai inossidabili No. 1.4509 o 1.4512. Mentre i tubi più tradizionali, ad esempio, hanno spessori delle pareti di 60 x 1 mm, i tubi a parete sottile hanno spessori di 60 x 0,6 mm. Schwarze-Robitec ha messo a punto le sue macchine di piegatura a controllo computerizzato proprio tenendo conto di queste proprietà. Se si ha bisogno di raggi flessibili e di una produzione efficiente di tubi complessi piegati in un’unica operazione, allora le macchine con tecnologia a raggio variabile (MR) e con due teste di piegatura (Twin) sono la scelta più giusta.

Especially for bending these tubes, Schwarze-Robitec has optimized the transport boost of its CNC machines and adapted the bending tools. The bending forces of the CNC machines from Schwarze-Robitec are exercised precisely on the thin-walled tubes. Due to the better adjustability of the forces the machines achieve, even with thin-walled tubes made of titanium, aluminum, copper or stainless steels such as No. 1.4509 or 1.4512, the most precise bending is the result. While the usual tubes, for example, have a wall thickness of 60 x 1 millimeters, the thin-walled tubes only have 60 x 0.6 millimeters. Schwarze-Robitec has fine-tuned his computer controlled bending machines especially to these properties. If flexible radii and efficient production of complex bent tubes are needed in one operation, the machines with multi-radius technology (MR) and with two bending heads (Twin) are the suitable choice.
